This is Korea-related — it happened in Taegu — but the real reason for mentioning this news item is that I just love that the sprinter's name is Bolt, Usain Bolt.
I'm trying to think of some other aptly-named people, but all I can come up with off the top of my head is Steve Jobs, who has given a lot of people work in the Bay Area. Or Jack Shepherd, who herded all the Oceanic 815 survivors to safety, but he's a fictional character.
Anyone else?
Pearls of witticism from 'Bo the Blogger: Kushibo's Korea blog... Kushibo-e Kibun... Now with Less kimchi, more nunchi. Random thoughts and commentary (and indiscernibly opaque humor) about selected social, political, economic, and health-related issues of the day affecting "foreans," Koreans, Korea and East Asia, along with the US, especially Hawaii, Orange County and the rest of California, plus anything else that is deemed worthy of discussion. Forza Corea!
I'm a big track fan. Compared to the sort of cities that normally host the World Championships of track, Daegu doesn't quite fit. Recent hosts have been Berlin, Osaka, Helsinki, Paris, Edmonton (okay), Seville, Athens and Gotheburg (okay).
ReplyDeleteThat said, they got themselves quite a meet here. Korea tries hard to be the best at everything (mocked in that blog title The Hub of Sparkle), but for all the pancakes it throws at the wall, a lot of them stick. Incheon Airport is a great example.
The only aptly-named person that I can think of at this moment is Sally Ride, who rode the space shuttle to become the first American woman in space.
ReplyDeleteI was pissed that this all happened a few minutes away from my apartment. The whole area was shut down. Took me an hour to get home from work.

Good analogy. But there will be some people who, no matter how good Korea's pancakes and how good the aim, will insist the pancakes are soiled underwear.
[I'm channeling a joke I learned in high school:
Q: What's the difference between rude and crude?
A: Rude is when you throw your underwear at the wall. Crude is when it sticks.]
S. Frank Kim, I should have thought of Sally Ride!
ReplyDeleteDoes Dick Cheney count?

I was thinking that same thing as I was reading your comment.
One could get physical (as in, related to physics) and suggest that, in accordance with every reaction having an equal and opposite reaction, it would be natural that a sped-up man would cause other things nearby to slow down.
My favorite name is probably: 'Judge Learned Hand'.
ReplyDeleteHow 'Learned' is a first name, I'll never know, but it's awesome anyway.
