Wild boars terrorize Seoul

Someone on another blog noted — in response to something where this seeming non-sequitur of a statement was indeed relevant — that "a tiger eating a pig just isn't right."

Oh, how wrong she is, I told her (because that's what I'm good at). In Korea back in traditional times, wild boars (멧돼지; mettwaeji) and wild tigers were each other's prey in the forests of the Land of Morning Calm.

This came to an end in the early 20th century when the Imperial Japanese took over and took up tiger-hunting for sport. Now this icon of the Korean Peninsula has all but vanished (though there reportedly are some in North Korea and perhaps a few in the DMZ).

But even worse is that wild boars now roam South Korean cities and terrorize the citizenry.

This is why we should not upset the delicate balance of nature. Who knows what demons the spotted owl is holding back?
